The integration of tribal communities into the Indian mainstream has been a multifaceted challenge shaped by historical, cultural, and political complexities. This paper critically explores the approach taken by independent India, particularly under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, who emphasized development without forced assimilation. Nehru advocated for a policy of integration that preserved tribal identity while promoting inclusion through education, local governance, and economic support. The paper examines the constitutional safeguards provided to tribal communities and traces the unique trajectory of tribal integration in Northeast India, culminating in the formation of autonomous councils and separate states like Meghalaya. By analyzing grassroots movements, government policies, and institutional reforms, the study highlights the tensions between state-led modernization and the autonomy of tribal groups, offering insights into the broader discourse of cultural preservation, regional identity, and national unity.
